Study Tips
  • The exam usually runs around 100-150 multiple-choice questions, depending on your state. Think of it as the ultimate skincare and haircare trivia night… minus the cocktails.

  • You’ll typically have about 90 minutes to 2 hours. Enough time to think, but not enough time to start a new contour routine mid-test.

  • Expect questions on sanitation, safety, skin and hair science, treatments, chemical services, and client consultation. Basically, everything you’ve practiced on mannequins, models, and very patient friends.

  • Most states require around 70-75% to pass. You don’t need perfection, just enough to prove you won’t accidentally bleach someone’s eyebrows off.

  • Exams are usually held at state testing centers approved by your cosmetology board. No, sadly, you can’t take it from your couch with a sheet mask on.

  • Costs vary by state, but expect somewhere between $75-$150. Consider it an investment in your license… or one less Sephora haul.

  • You’ll register through your state’s cosmetology board or chosen testing provider. You fill out an application, prove your training hours, and pay the fee. Glamorous, right?

  • Most testing centers offer dates year-round. You won’t be stuck waiting for a once-a-year event like the Olympics.

  • Yes, you’ll need to complete your required training hours from an approved cosmetology or esthetics school. You can’t just show up with a makeup brush and vibes.

  • Absolutely. Most states let you retake it, though you may need to wait a few weeks and pay the fee again. Consider it a round two redemption arc.

  • Yes. Many states separate cosmetology and esthetics licenses. Cosmetology covers hair, nails, and skin, while esthetics zooms in on skincare only. Think of cosmetology as the whole buffet, while esthetics is the skincare dessert table.

  • We’re sorry to see you go, and if you’ve already passed your exam, congratulations! 🎉
