Study Tips
  • The NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam has 100 scored questions plus 20 pretest questions that don’t count toward your score. So, you’ll see 120 total, but only 100 matter. Unfortunately, you won’t know which 20 are just “for science,” so treat them all like the real deal.

  • You’ll have 2 hours and 30 minutes. That’s enough time to carefully answer, check your work, and maybe even fantasize about your celebratory coffee afterward.

  • The exam covers six domains: safety and compliance, patient preparation, routine blood collection, special collections, processing specimens, and professional issues. Basically, everything from putting on gloves to making sure the lab doesn’t reject your sample.

  • You need a scaled score of 390 out of 500. Think of it as needing about a “B” average. It’s not perfection, but it does prove you know your stuff.

  • You can take the Phlebotomy CPT NHA exam at a PSI testing center or online with a remote proctor. And yes, if you go the online route, someone really will be watching, so save the pajama bottoms for after.

  • The exam fee is usually around $125. That’s cheaper than a year’s worth of scrubs but still an investment, so study smart.

  • You register through the NHA website. Create an account, pick your test date and location, pay the fee, and you’re set. It’s kind of like booking a flight, minus the legroom complaints.

  • The exam is offered year-round at testing centers and online, depending on availability. In other words, it’s ready when you are… but don’t procrastinate.

  • Yes. You’ll need either completion of a phlebotomy training program or relevant work experience (usually within the last year). No, you can’t just binge YouTube videos and walk in.

  • Yes. NHA allows retakes, though you may need to wait 30 days between attempts and pay the fee again. So, best strategy: study like you want to only pay once.

  • Yes. Other certifying bodies, like ASCP or AMT, also offer phlebotomy credentials. The content is similar, but requirements, cost, and recognition may vary depending on employer and state. NHA’s CPT is widely accepted, especially for entry-level positions.

  •  We’re sorry to see you go, and if you’ve already passed your exam, congratulations! 🎉
