âReally helpful with memorization of medication names. Also really like how it keeps track of areas I need to work on.â

The PTCB Exam (also known as the PTCE) has 90 multiple-choice questions. Only 80 are scored, while 10 are âmysteryâ test questions being tried out for future exams. You donât know which is which, so treat every single question like it counts.
-
Youâll have 2 hours to take the PTCB exam. That breaks down to 1 hour and 50 minutes for the test itself, plus 10 minutes for the tutorial and post-exam survey. Think of it like bonus content, kind of like a trailer before the main feature.
-
The test covers four main areas: medications, federal requirements, patient safety and quality assurance, and order entry and processing. Basically, everything youâd need to not mix up your ibuprofen with insulin.
-
You need a scaled score of 1,400 out of a possible 1,600. Donât panic, math isnât as scary as it sounds. Just think of it as aiming for a solid âB+â performance.
-
Itâs administered at Pearson VUE testing centers nationwide. Youâll probably be sitting in a small, quiet room with cameras, headphones, and a very serious proctor who definitely wonât laugh at your nervous jokes.
-
The exam fee is $129. Not pocket change, but cheaper than a semester of textbooks.
-
You register through the PTCB website. Create an account, fill out your application, pay your fee, and wait for the official thumbs-up to schedule your test.
-
The PTCE is offered year-round, so you donât have to plan your life around a once-a-year event. You can schedule it when you feel ready or when procrastination guilt finally wins.
-
Yes. You need a high school diploma (or equivalent) and compliance with all PTCB policies, plus you must not have any disqualifying criminal or disciplinary records. Basically, they want to make sure youâre trustworthy before handing you the keys to the medicine cabinet.
-
Yes. You can retake it, but youâll have to wait 60 days before your second and third attempts, and 6 months if you strike out three times. Fail four times and youâll need special permission. In other words, donât make this a hobby.
-
Yes. The PTCB offers advanced and specialty certifications (like CPhT-Adv or technician product verification). The PTCE is the entry-level exam. Think of it as the driverâs license you need before you can start working toward the NASCAR stuff.
