The VTNE has 170 multiple-choice questions, but only 150 count toward your score. The other 20 are sneaky âtrialâ questions the exam makers are testing. You wonât know which is which, so treat them all like they matter.

Youâll have 3 hours to finish. Thatâs about a minute per question, with some wiggle room for deep breathing and second-guessing.

You apply through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) website. Once approved, youâll get an email with scheduling instructions through Prometric. Itâs a little paperwork, a lot of waiting, and then boom, youâre booked.
-
Itâs offered three times a year, in testing âwindowsâ of about a month each (spring, summer, fall). Pick your window, mark your calendar, and start practicing saying goodbye to your free time.
-
Yes, you need to have graduated (or be near graduation) from an accredited veterinary technology program. No shortcuts here: knowledge first, exam second.
-
Yes, you can retake it up to five times. But each attempt costs the same fee and another round of studying. Consider it extra motivation to nail it the first time.
-
The VTNE is the credentialing exam for veterinary technicians in the U.S. and Canada. After passing, some states or provinces may tack on their own jurisprudence exam about local laws. That part is less about anesthesia protocols and more about âdonât break the rules.â
