âI love that you can customize your study settings and change them as needed. It also has a goal tracker, and you earn badges for completing different tasks. I would highly recommend!â -

The EPPP has 225 multiple-choice questions, but only 175 are scored. The other 50 are âtestâ questions, kind of like practice dummies. You wonât know which is which, so yes, you have to take them all seriously.
-
You get 4 hours and 15 minutes. Thatâs basically the length of two Marvel movies back-to-back, except with fewer explosions and way more brain sweat.
-
The exam covers eight domains: biological bases of behavior, cognitive-affective bases, social-cultural bases, growth and lifespan, assessment, treatment and intervention, research methods, and ethical/legal issues. Everything youâve ever learned in psych school shows up at the party.
-
The passing score is typically scaled to around 500 out of 800, though it can vary slightly depending on your state board. Think of it like a really high-stakes video game where the âlevel-upâ number changes depending on which state you live in.
-
Youâll take it at a Pearson VUE testing center, which is basically the DMV of exams but with stricter silence policies. Some states are also rolling out remote proctoring.
-
The exam itself costs $600, plus additional state and application fees that can easily add a few hundred more. In other words, itâs a very expensive way to prove you actually studied.
-
First, your state licensing board has to approve you. Then youâll get the green light to schedule through Pearson VUE. So, yes, you need both state permission and corporate permission, like a psychological Hunger Games.
-
The EPPP is offered year-round, so you can schedule a date that works for you. Just donât schedule it right after a wedding weekend or in the middle of flu season. Timing is everything.
-
Yes. You generally need a doctoral degree in psychology and board approval from your state. You donât just roll out of Psych 101 and sign up.
-
Yes. Most states allow multiple retakes, though some require a waiting period. Just remember, itâs a retake, not a time loop. You still need to prep differently the second time around.
-
Some states also require an oral exam, a jurisprudence (law/ethics) exam, or additional supervised hours. The EPPP tests your broad psych knowledge, while these extras test whether you actually know the local rules or can apply knowledge without sounding like a robot.
