âIt doesnât just focus on theories, but it also talks about ethics and other aspects of social work that you wouldnât even think about studying. I highly recommend this app.â -

âI lose my study cards all the time, the cards do not track my progress, or give me the encouragement that this app does.â -

The ASWB exam has 170 multiple choice questions. But hereâs the catch: only 150 count toward your score. The other 20 are just âpretestâ questions trying out for the big leagues. Youâll never know which ones are which, so treat every question like it matters.
-
Youâll get 4 hours to complete the exam. Thatâs plenty of time to read, breathe, second-guess yourself, and then circle back to the answer you thought of first (which is usually right, by the way).
-
Expect a mix of human development, assessment, intervention planning, ethics, and professional relationships. Basically, all the stuff youâll actually need as a social worker, wrapped in carefully worded questions designed to make you pause and squint.
-
The passing score varies slightly depending on the exam version, but itâs usually around 93 to 107 correct answers out of 150. Translation: aim to get about two-thirds right and youâre in the winnerâs circle.
-
Youâll take it at a Pearson VUE testing center. Think quiet room, fingerprint scan, and the type of chairs that squeak at the worst possible moment.
-
Itâll run you $230 to $260, depending on the level. Yes, thatâs a chunk of change, but consider it an investment in your professional superhero cape.
-
Start with your stateâs social work board to get approval. Once they give you the green light, youâll register and pay through the ASWB website, then schedule at Pearson VUE. Itâs like buying concert tickets, but less fun and way more important.
-
Pretty much year-round. Pearson VUE offers daily testing slots, so you donât have to wait for a âspecial day.â The real challenge is finding a date when you feel equally prepared and not panicked.
-
Yes. Youâll need the appropriate degree (BSW or MSW), depending on which level youâre testing for and your state boardâs blessing. No sneaking in from the parking lot.
-
Yes. Youâll need to wait 90 days before trying again, which is both a bummer and a gift. Thatâs 3 months to regroup, study smarter, and show the exam whoâs boss next time.
-
Yep. There are five levels: Associate, Bachelorâs, Masterâs, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical. Each is tailored to your education and career stage. Think of it like video game levels: you unlock harder bosses as you advance in your social work journey. Check out more info about them at ASWB.org
