Study Tips
  • The exam has two main parts. The civics test has up to 20 questions if you qualify for the shortened version, or up to 100 questions to study from, with 10 asked on test day. The English test includes speaking, reading, and writing tasks. Think of it like a pop quiz plus a mini English class rolled into one nerve-wracking, but manageable, interview.

  • When you attend your naturalization interview with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), you will take a combined interview + testing appointment. The interview covers your application (Form N-400) and eligibility questions, and you’ll also take the English and civics tests (unless you qualify for an exemption). USCIS+1

While USCIS does not publish a strict time-limit for how many minutes you are allocated, practitioners and advocacy groups state that the entire session (interview + test) typically lasts about 20-30 minutes in straightforward cases. onepercentforamerica.org+2CitizenPath+2

Important details to keep in mind:

    • The clock starts once you’re called in and the officer begins your eligibility review and test. Extra time may be incurred for security check-in, waiting, or if your case is complex. visa4you.info

    • If the officer needs more time (because additional documents are required, you didn’t pass the test portion, or there’s complexity in your file), the appointment might be continued or rescheduled — and you may not finish in one session. USCIS+1

    • Passing the test does not equal citizenship yet—you still must attend the Oath of Allegiance ceremony, where you officially become a U.S. citizen. myUSCIS

  • You’ll get hit with US history, government, and civics. Expect questions about the Constitution, presidents, wars, and how government works. It’s like your high school history class, except this time you actually care about the grade.

  • For the civics part, you need to answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly. For the English portion, you need to show you can speak, read, and write in basic English. Don’t worry, they’re not asking for Shakespeare.

  • You’ll take it at a USCIS field office during your naturalization interview. Not at your local Starbucks, sadly. Bring your paperwork, your ID, and your calmest self.

  • The exam itself is included in the naturalization application fee, which is currently $760. It’s basically the priciest test you’ll ever take, but at least you only pay once.

  • You don’t sign up for the exam directly. Instead, you file Form N-400, the Application for Naturalization. USCIS will schedule your interview and exam as part of the process. It’s like registering for a concert and getting a pop quiz as your opening act.

  • There aren’t fixed dates like SATs. Exams are scheduled year-round, depending on when you apply and how busy your local USCIS office is. Think of it as a surprise party. Your invitation arrives in the mail.

  • Yes. You need to meet the naturalization eligibility requirements, like being a lawful permanent resident for a set number of years, showing good moral character, and being at least 18 years old. No prerequisite classes, but life experience counts here.

  • Yes. If you fail, you’ll get one more shot within 60 to 90 days. It’s basically the exam world’s “second chance” policy. Fail again, and you’ll have to reapply. So study like the retake doesn’t exist.

  • The US Citizenship exam is its own thing. Other immigration-related interviews or tests exist, but this one is the golden ticket to citizenship. Think of it as the final boss in the immigration video game.
