Study Tips
  • The Real Estate exam usually has around 100 to 150 multiple-choice questions, depending on your state. It’s like being back in high school, except the pop quiz determines your career instead of your GPA.

  • Most states give you about 2.5 to 4 hours to finish. That’s enough time to overthink a few questions, panic halfway through, and still finish strong if you pace yourself.

  • You’ll face questions on property ownership, contracts, real estate laws, financing, and fair housing. Basically, everything from “What is a deed?” to “Can you sell a house to your cousin without breaking a law?”

  • Passing scores vary, but it’s usually around 70 to 75 percent. Think of it as needing a solid C or better. Luckily, no one’s going to frame your test score on the office wall.

  • Exams are usually offered at approved testing centers, often run by Pearson VUE or PSI. In short, you’ll be sitting in a sterile computer lab that smells faintly of pencils and anxiety.

  • It’s typically around $85 to $125, depending on your state. Not the cheapest test you’ll ever take, but hey, it’s cheaper than a semester of college textbooks.

  • You’ll apply through your state’s real estate commission or the testing provider’s website. It’s basically like buying concert tickets, except there’s no front row seating, just a seat in front of a monitor.

  • Most states offer year-round testing at multiple locations. That means you don’t have to wait for a “season” like it’s the Super Bowl. You can test as soon as you’re ready.

  • Yes, you usually need to complete a state-approved pre-licensing course. Think of it as your “training montage” before stepping into the ring.

  • Absolutely. Most states let you retake it, sometimes after a short waiting period. Failing just means you’re paying a little extra tuition at the School of Hard Knocks.

  • Yes, some states have both a national and a state-specific section. The national part covers universal real estate knowledge, while the state section is all about local laws and rules. In short: one’s the “big picture,” the other is “your backyard.”
